The mighty staghorn fern

  • Propagation of your staghorn

    1.

Use a sharp knife to trim off young shoots---called "pups"---from the base of the fern. Pack the hole left in the mother plant with sphagnum moss.

  • 2

Fill a small pot halfway with peat-based potting mix. Gently push your pup down into it, and fill in the rest of the pot with more potting mix. Water your fern well without soaking it. Place it in a window that gets filtered sunlight and keep it moist, but not soaking wet.

Mount your staghorn pup onto a board instead of potting it. Choose any kind of board, or even a piece of driftwood. I have used 2 different size dowel rods 2" and .25" drilled holes in the 2" dowel rod big enough to push through your .25" rods to 2 inches appear on both sides of your 2" dowel rod. You want to drill 4-5 holes and push your rods through all holes remember to leave 2" of the .25" rods show on both sides...

Fill the space between the rods with long-fibered sphagnum moss until is about 2 inches deep. Nestle one or two pups into the moss, and make sure their bases are completely covered with moss. I have also use banana peels mixed in with the moss just a few will do the trick

Tie one end of your nylon or waxed string to a .25"rod. Bring it across the pups and moss to the opposite .25"rod, wrap it around once and then bring it back across to a different .25" rod. Continue winding the string back and forth across the moss and pups from .25"rod to .25"rod, making a web to hold the moss and pups in place. Tie it off when you feel the pups are securely held.

Water your now mounted staghorn ferns by soaking them in water---you can put the whole board in the sink, a bucket -for 10 minutes, 2 times a week. Give them a drink of diluted liquid fertilizer once a month.
