Polka-Dot Wasp Moth

                                             EATING MACHINES
These moths are pests to oleander and devils potato. Sometimes they will also enjoy the tastes of milk weed.
The Larva will gladly eat the leaves off of your Oleander bushes in a day or two. The larva is Orange with black spots.
We plant different plants like milkweed to attract butterflies and some people plant oleander to attract these beauties. Again they will strip the leaves off your oleander but more often then not the oleander will bounce back and be happy.
Interesting note, Female polka dot wasp moths emit ultra sonic sounds to attract her man, Not the scented pheromones like other moths or butterflies.

Pretty Ringnecks

                          Ringneck snakes.
Harmless, common and a beneficial snake.

Ringnecks love to munch on slugs, worms, small lizards,
ants and itsy-bitsy frogs.
They have a rough life! Lots of other animals love to view them as a tasty dinner.
Newly hatched Ringnecks have to dodge spiders( yes spiders!) and centipedes. Other predators include,  Skunks, opossum, other snakes, Toads, Bullfrogs, owls and humans with shovels .
If they are threatened they will coil their body around showing the underside of their body that is brightly colored red to orange, If that fails they will release a foul smelling odor. It is claimed they could bite -I have never known or met anyone who has ever been bitten by this beautiful but Harmless reptile.

A couple great pick for Florida winter from your local lawn service provider

      Camellia

    1. Varieties within the Camellia species are good plants for the Florida landscape and bloom in the winter. The Japanese camellia (Camellia japonica), for example, is a shrub that displays white or near white flowers and glossy, evergreen foliage. Deciduous Holly

    1. Deciduous holly (Ilex decidua) is a shrub that belongs to the Ilex species and is well-suited to Florida's climate. It has white flowers in the summer and orange to scarlet berries in fall and winter with deciduous foliage. Thriving in sun to partial shade, deciduous holly plants grow as high as 20 to 30 feet.

    Cleyera

  1. Cleyera plants (Cleyera japonica), also called "tricolor" or Japanesecleyera, are evergreen shrubs that do pretty good as winter plants for Florida. They display  reddish foliage in winter. Cleyeras also have a fragrant creamy white flowers, and are grown for their evergreen foliage. Needing light to full shade, cleyeras reach grow as high as 8 to 12 feet.

   Palm tree facts and Maintenance

There is said to be 2,600 species within the palm family with a wide variety of physical traits.

Most exist in the tropics, but some come from the Mediterranean, southern Europe, the tropics of Asia and Africa, as well as South America and southern regions of the United States.

Palm trees are known to be monopodial, meaning coming from one stem. In most palm trees, the stems tend to be covered with stiff fibers

Fruit
Certain types of palm trees develop fruit and some edible fruit.
The coconut palm and date palm grow fruit of the same names. Other types of palms bear edible fruit including the Guadelupe palm, jelly palm, Chilean wine palm and California fan palm. The fruit of these palms vary in texture, flavor and color.

Trimming
Some palms shed the fronds naturally while other delay the process. Many palm tree varieties need manual pruning. You should not prune the fronds too close to the trunk. Pruning excessively can lead to increased vulnerability to diseases along with limiting the tree’s ability to tolerate warm conditions.

Water
Palms are the Great choice for low-maintenance landscapes but most species need only a bare minimum of water to survive.

cold tolerance

Most palm trees that live in tropical environments are not very cold tolerant at all. Most will die or become extremely damaged in temperatures that dip below freezing, but some have the ability to withstand cold temperatures. The most cold-hardy palm is generally considered to be the needle palm. This palm is planted outside with very little protection in areas as far north as New York City. It can withstand temperatures as low as 20 degrees below zero.

My personal favorites are.

Purple King Palm Tree
